Day 7 Sremski Karlovci, Belgrade 93km, 6hrs 19

View

Our day started well, after an excellent sleep in our field, far enough out of the town to not be in any one's way, and nicely hidden by the hedge so we were not obvious from the road. The shade of the hedge stopped the morning sun heating the tent up too much, so we slept well in the morning.

Sremski Karlovci is an important little town, being the seat of the Orthodox patriarch, and it has a number of churches, and schools of divinity. It was very grand for a small place.

The road climbed to the south and we were amused to be passed by a lorry, which then got stuck going up the hill, so we passed it again, with the poor driver trying to work out how to hill start a huge lorry. This was not a particularly pleasant ride, up hill in the sun, being overtaken by straining, noisy cars ever minute. However hard this was, we got fantastic payback for the next few kilometers, gentle downhill, lovely views with a few roadside fruitsellers.

After this, the road was generally flat, endless and pretty much straight. We also had the pleasure of a headwind for company, and were rolling on some pretty poor road surface. The rains of hungary are well behind us, and the days increasingly hot.

We stopped for lunch atop of a 'river cliff' with chattering bee-eaters flying about. We spent ages trying to get a photo of one, but although they do fly tantalisingly close, we were never fast enough to get a half decent image of these multicoloured beasties.

During a a reasonably dull afternoon of riding, we stopped for an cold drink at a river side resort, which was like 'skegness on danube' a few tatty bars, a few people swimming in the river, amongst pretty grim looking junk floating about in the water. Still the folks were friendly, and the drink cold - just what we wanted.  We rode on towards Belgrade, by far the biggest and most important city in this area. As we approached we rode through Symon, with lovely cobbled narrow windy streets. This led us down towards the water front, where we metIvanka and Milan, friends of Sonja's sister who would guide us around town, and give us the locals angle on life here. We ate that evening in one of the many river side restaurants by the confluence of the Sava and Danube.
