Day 8, Belgrade, Rest Day

A cloudy but warm day, with rain later, and a massive thunder storm with deluge in the evening.

We had cycled further than we have ever done before in a week, and this was starting to show, average speeds were reducing, and getting out of bed in the morning was getting harder. We also had sore bums!

We stayed two nights in a hotel by the station, which according to our host Milan, used to be a porn cinema! During the day we walked to the Citadel, which has super views over both the Sava and Danube Rivers. It also has a huge collection of tanks and field guns. We met up with our Basque friend who we had met earlier and he had hooked up with a German guy, so we wandered around together for a while, and discussed the things that cycle tourers discuss, routes, good places to visit, gear and all the sort of stuff that is probably meaningless to anyone else! They both had rather more time than us, and were spending more time here.

We took a very good bus tour of the town, and saw the results of the NATO bombing in the 1990's. The bombed out army headquarters is quite a mess, as are a few other significant buildings. The town is a real mix - dirty tower blocks from the 50's next to fabulous art-nouveau buildings. We visited the main Orthodox church, which is unfinished, but already pretty amazing. We had a late lunch in the "?"  (yes, that's what it's called, it's not that we have forgotten!) as we stopped for a mid morning cake in the Tzar restaurant. We also nearly adopted a duckling from a street side animal seller, but decided that although it might be fun for us to have a pet in tow, it probably wouldn't be much fun for the duck, and anyway, it probably wouldn't like the sea side when we finally did get to the black sea.

Not sure what this building is...

We met up with Milan and Ivanka for drinks in the evening, there was an amazing rain storm that had everyone running for cover.
