Our first beach front cycle path of the day.
What a lovely day! After the rains of yesterday it was lovely to start the day dry and with the promise of sunshine. We are still not well drilled when it comes to packing and it took us a long time to get going, but that’s no big deal - we are not in a hurry. The little shop by the beach only had UHT milk, but that is so much better than when I was young, and they had a fresh bread roll service so we had a pretty luxury breakfast all the same.
I spent a bit of time trying to cure squeaking brakes on my and Sonja’s bikes. The latter more successful than the former.
We had lovely cycling with a mix of beach side paths, quiet roads through agricultural land and even some forest tracks. I also managed to cure my squeaking brake which was a blessed relief.
There are some absolutely lovely thatched cottages, houses and barns each lovelier than the next, and the gardens are very well cared for. Quite a few dream cottages with gardens and sea views.
The boys found a good bench for lunch - and about an hour later an amazing cafe just behind the levee by the beach. A lot of the land here seems to be at or just below sea level and a high levee just behind the beach protects this land from the sea. Some lovely house looked very vulnerable to high water and the rising sea levels.
We all enjoyed cake or ice cream before continuing our journey.
We ride through the old port of Kappeln which still has an active fishing fleet and seemed a popular place to sit and enjoy the views from a waterfront cafe. We also stopped here to shop for supper and breakfast.
Our campsite is by the water, but there isn’t a beach here. The entire waterfront is also occupied by camper van or caravan spaces. Many here seem to be permanent residents. We have the entire tent ‘lawn’ to ourselves!
